Parlando con Marco di chitarre senza tasti, mi disse del desiderio di poter provare questo tipo di strumento, poco tempo dopo mi chiese di modificare la tastiera di un suo strumento elettrico a sette corde per renderlo senza tasti. Dopo l’estrazione dei tasti dalla tastiera in palissandro ho inserito nei tagli dell’acero di spessore adeguato, questo contrasto di colore dei legni serve a  mantenere un riferimento visivo che può aiutare nella fase iniziale di utilizzo dello strumento, ho poi effettuato una rettifica per rendere la tastiera perfettamente diritta e liscia. Particolare attenzione ho posto alla regolazione del capotasto, le corde devono essere regolate molto basse per evitare uno “stiramento” delle stesse che causa un inalzamento dell’intonazione in prossimità delle prime posizioni. L’altezza delle corde in prossimità del dodicesimo è di mm. 1,2 per la prima corda e di 1,6 per la settima.La scalature delle corde utilizzata è la seguente,
1°= 012 / 2°= 016 / 3°= 024 / 4°= 032 / 5°= 044 / 6°= 056 / 7°= 062
la chitarra è accordata in modo standard. Ho regolato i pick up distanziandoli maggiormente dalle corde avvolte per compensare il minor volume generato dalle corde lisce, il sustain delle note è molto buono anche con suoni puliti.
Riguardo l’aspetto tecnico esecutivo, la tastiera fretless espande la sensibilità e l’espressività acquisite con la tastiera coi tasti.

Modify fretboard to “fretless”

Talking with Marco about fretless guitars, he told me about his desire to try this type of instrument. Shortly after he asked me to modify the fretboard of his seven-stringed electric instrument to make it fretless.  After extracting the frets from rosewood fingerboard. I inserted in the cuts maple of adequate thickness, this contrasting color of the wood is aimed to maintain a visual reference that can help in the initial phase of the instrument use ; then I made an adjustment to make the fingerboard perfectly straight and smooth. I take care particulary to the adjustment of the nut, the strings must be set very low to avoid a stretching which causes an increase of the intonation near the first positions. The height of the strings near the twelfth is 1.2 mm. for the first string 1.6 for the seventh. The gauge of the strings used is as follows,
1 ° = 012/2 = 016/3 = 024/4 = 032 ° / 5 ° = 044/6 = 056 ° / 7 ° = 062
the guitar is tuned to standard.
I adjusted the pick-ups height so that the output level between wound and plain strings is balanced, sustain is very good with clean sound as well. Regarding the technical and performing aspects, fretless guitar expands expressiveness acquired with fretted guitar.
